On Saturday, members of the Jemseg Grand Lake Watershed Association set out to learn more about Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM), an invasive plant which has taken root in our waterways, as part of our new Adopt a Shoreline stewardship program! Our goal is to monitor the spread of EWM in our watershed so that informed decisions can be made in attempts to manage it. Since it typically grows in water 1-3 meters (3-10 feet) deep, we set out on kayaks and paddleboards to survey Robertson's Point!By learning to identify and report EWM, we can collectively survey our watershed for affected areas while enjoying time on the water!EWM is characterized by:- Four (sometimes five) featherlike leaves per whorl- <12 'hairs' on each side of the leaf- Reddish stemsWant to become a steward of your environment?Join the Jemseg Grand Lake Watershed Association for only $10 a year to support our work and receive invitations to meetings, webinars, and fun educational workshops like this one! Don't forget to clean, drain, and dry your equipment as you explore New Brunswick's waters this summer to help prevent the spread of harmful species.#newbrunswick #conservation #nature #eurasianwatermilfoil #environmental #stewardship #volunteer ... What's considered wildlife habitat?Meet the Cobblestone Tiger Beetle, an endangered insect which only resides in a handful of locations in New Brunswick and the Eastern United States. In New Brunswick, the Cobblestone Tiger Beetle can be found on the shores of Grand Lake! While many first picture lush forests and productive marshlands when they imagine habitat, this species lives on the rocky shorelines, where their larvae burrow beneath the cobbles. These beetles are great indicator species, representing the health of plant and other insect species in locations where it is present. New Brunswick's population includes a variety of beautiful colors, brown, green, and even blue, all framed by a distinctive cream border on the elytra, and with a bright orange abdomen beneath. You can help keep the shoreline beautiful and biodiverse by:- staying on the trails and off the beach when driving ATVs.- minimizing use of pesticides, fertilizers, and salts at home.- taking care to not harm the beetles directly; they are not dangerous to humans, preying only on insects and #conservationn#newbrunswickw#naturec#biodiversityodiversity ... Last month, we mentioned collecting samples of water from both the surface and at a depth of 20 meters. But how do we do that? The Niskin bottle is a device that is lowered into deep water. A messenger weight is sent down to trap the water sample once it reaches the target depth! These samples are later analyzed by the NB Research and Productivity Council for various chemicals, metals, and E. coli! Samples are collected in many areas around the watershed. Monitoring the lakes and rivers for abnormalities and pollutants is important to gauge wildlife habitat quality and ensure safe areas for recreation.Thank you so much for your support this summer! Stay tuned for further updates! 🛶🌿💧🐸#conservation #freshwater #newbrunswick #nature #wildlife #birds #frog #watershed ... See MoreSee Less
